Prestigious Apartment Project, Battersea, London

We were appointed to produce a detailed electrical engineering design for a large high-specification residential development located in Battersea, London.

The scheme design included the design of six separate 11kV distribution substations, a main intake substation operating at 11kV, 11kV incoming cable arrangements fed directly from a primary substation as well as producing load flow, fault level and earthing studies for approval by the adopting DNO and IDNO.

The main challenges on the project were HV cable sizing, determining the most appropriate protection arrangements for the 11kV system as well as producing the most cost-effective design that meets with the adopting authority engineering requirements.

45MW Biomass Plant, Sheffield

A complex 45MW connection onto the Northern Powergrid distribution network. The design brief included the detailed design of a 5km 33kV cable below-ground route, cable sizing using proprietary HV cable sizing software, 33kV substation design, substation earthing design and production of specifications for major plant and equipment, all for review and approval by Northern Powergrid.

The biggest challenge on the project was the design of the 33kV cable route, from the bulk supply substation (point of connection) through to the biomass plant. The cable route followed some of the busiest arterial routes through Sheffield, with the additional challenges of existing power cables, existing utility apparatus as well as the crossing of buried transmission cables. Our expert design engineers were able to model the cable route to determine mutual heating effects and arrive at an engineering solution which satisfied Northern Powergrid design approval engineers.

The detailed design included the 33kV main intake substation, pressure rise calculations, switchgear layouts, ancillary equipment layouts, battery sizing, plant and equipment specifications and substation building services design.

Marsh Farm Biomass Generation, Essex

Utility Engineering Solutions Ltd has completed a turnkey contestable electrical connections project for a new biomass plant in Basildon.

Timely delivery and execution of the contestable works was crucial to achieving tight project deadlines. Marsh Farm 500kW CHP farm-biogas plant was developed by Biowatt, specialists in the field of anaerobic digestion. Construction of the biomass plant began in June 2016 with official G59 approval required by September 2016. Biowatt required an 11kV connection to the local UK Power Networks’ distribution network for both import and export power.

Due to the export requirements, the supply was to be metered at 11kV, with a separate substation required to house the Biowatt transformer and to supply power to the UKPN substation for battery and tripping supplies.

Grantley Hall, Ripon

Utility Engineering Solutions Ltd has been appointed to provide power to Grantley Hall, a luxurious 5-star hotel.

The Grantley Hall hotel development, a Grade II listed, 5-star hotel, includes a venue facility to cater for up to 200 guests, a signature restaurant, an all-day brasserie, three bars and a private members club.

The hotel development will also include a spa and wellness centre and will provide a stunning wedding venue.

The projected electrical demands for the hotel development necessitated the establishment of a new substation and associated high voltage cable infrastructure, to be supplied from the high voltage distribution network. This outcome followed detailed analyses of the electricity distribution network to determine the most cost-effective way to provide power to the hotel, whilst minimising disruption to the local community and environment and ensuring electricity assets are buried below ground, wherever possible.

Sale Residential/Commercial Development

Utility Engineering Solutions Ltd has undertaken the contestable electrical connections work for a new mixed-use development in Sale, Manchester.

The company has delivered cost-effective innovative solutions that gives the development and its occupants flexibility and choice of electricity suppliers.

The power requirements for the development necessitated the establishment of a new 500kVA unit substation and associated HV/LV cable infrastructure supplied from the local high voltage distribution network.

The apartments are electrically heated and the projected electrical capacity necessitated a detailed study of the local network by the local DNO to determine the point of connection. This was verified by the team at UES, with a sense check made on the local network capacities at 6600V.
