SEPTEMBER 2012

Major Client Saving....

UESL, in conjunction with its affiliate company, Utility Cost Reduction Solutions Ltd, has saved a major construction client £111,000 following a challenge on the configuration of a new HV network. The incumbent DNO has agreed to refund the client following a technical report prepared by UESL that identified alternative ways in which the recently commissioned 6600V network could have been designed and constructed.

NERS Appointment...

UESL has been awarded a contract to act as Technical Advisor to one of the largest NERS accredited companies in the UK. Work is underway to assess all operatives, including sub-contract staff to ensure full NERS compliance.

Windfarm Consultancy...

Following an existing client referral, UESL has been instructed to manage the grid connection process for an American company that has set up a UK base. UESL will complete G59/2 applications and will manage the grid connection application process, including challenging unnecessary or incorrectly apportioned reinforcement costs.  

Contestable Connection Design Appointment....

UESL awarded the 11kV design contract for West Carron landfill gas plant located in Scottish Power's area.  The design is to be completed on behalf of an existing ICP client.

 

JANUARY - AUGUST 2012

UESL COMPLETES FEASIBILITY REPORT FOR MAJOR CLIENT: UESL has just completed a feasibility study for a major housing development on behalf of a Manchester based  land and property development company. The scheme will comprise of up to 552 houses. UESL has identified a number of options available to significantly reduce utility infrastructure capex. Connection points to each of the utility networks have been confirmed and rather than take the traditional route of the incumbents adopting gas and electricity networks, UESL has approached key players in the independent network ownership sector. Capital allowances are applicable based upon distribution use of system revenue streams over the lifetime of the gas and electricity assets. These allowances can be offset against the capex for establishing new pipelines, electricity substations and HV/LV cables.

WESTERN GATEWAY INFRASTRUCTURE SCHEME: UESL has been appointed to manage the utility asset diversionary process for this major infrastructure scheme that will cross two boroughs, namely Trafford and Salford. The scheme will be one of the largest road infrastructure projects in the area for many years. UESL will play a key role in securing firm cost solutions from the statutory undertakings. UESL will also play a strategic role in identifying utility assets affected by the scheme and wherever possible, looking at alternative solutions to avoid costly diversions. More news on this appointment later this month.

DISTRIBUTED GENERATION PROJECT:  UESL has been awarded the contract to design the permanent 11kV connection to a new 2.3MWe landfill gas site in Blaydon Burn, in the north east of England. The works will include the detailed protection design for the NORTHERN POWERGRID G59 protection scheme, which incorporates a Micom P341 relay and GCM05 intertripping scheme. UESL has also secured the design contract for the 11kV Balance of Plant substation and associated equipment. UESL will also project manage the scheme from inception to final commissioning, planned for the end of 2012.

ICP AWARDED NERS PARTIAL ACCREDITATION: HRP Services Ltd has been awarded partial NERS accreditation following successful completion of a NERS compliant Safety Management System by UESL. The piece of work was completed within 4 weeks thus enabling HRP Services to tender for electrical project work throughout the UK.

STOR PROJECT - EARTHING STUDY: UESL has been awarded an additional contract on the Flatworth STOR project to carry out an earthing study for the entire STOR site, which will encompass the new 33kV substation, the existing BSP substation and the remote STOR facility that comprises of 20nr 0.5MWe synchronous generators. The study will take account of an existing National Grid 275kV tower and the effects of earth potential rise from the super grid. UESL has completed the contestable design for a key ICP client that includes the detailed protection scheme, the substation layouts, 33kV cable routes and all associated calculations, all items having been approved by Northern Powergrid.

NON-CONTESTABLE COST SAVING: UESL, in conunction with its sister company Utility Cost Reduction Solutions Ltd, has saved a distributed generator client £245,000. The incumbent DNO had insisted that a network reinforcement scheme was deemed necessary to enable connection of a 2.3MWe distributed generation scheme, however when UESL analysed the engineering proposals it became clear that that an alternative connection solution at a local primary would negate the need for network reinforcement. The DNO has subsequently amended the non-contestable quotation, minus the reinforcement costs!

NETWORK CONNECTION FEASIBILITY STUDIES:  UESL appointed to carry out a network connection study for a proposed landfill connection scheme at Longhill in Hartlepool. The appointment includes carrying out a review of the existing local network and carrying out a fault level level study to determine the effects on existing 11kV switchgear make and break duties.

NERS ACCREDITATION: UESL has been appointed by HRP Services Ltd in Birmingham to develop systems and procedures that will help the company gain partial NERS accreditation.

DISTRIBUTION NETWORK FEASIBILITY STUDIES: UESL appointed to carry out network feasibility studies for propsoed distributed generation projects at Gilberdyke, and Skibeden.

NETWORK CAPABILITY ASSESSMENT: UESL APPOINTED TO CARRY OUT AN ASSESSMENT OF AN EXISTING DISTRIBUTION NETWORK AND THE EFFECTS OF EXPORTING AN ADDITIONAL 500kWe USING EXISTING HV/LV ASSETS.

ELECTRICITY CONNECTION PROJECT MANAGEMENT: UESL AWARDED THE CONNECTIONS MANAGEMENT CONTRACT FROM A LEADING UK SATELLITE UPLINK PROVIDER FOR A NEW SITE LOCATED IN TRAFFORD PARK, MANCHESTER.

UTILITY INFRASTRUCTURE FEASIBILITY STUDY:  AN EXISTING CLIENT HAS APPOINTED UESL TO CARRY OUT A UTILITY INFRASTRUCTURE IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR A 550 UNIT RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH MANCHESTER. THE PIECE OF WORK WILL SEEK TO IDENTIFY UTILITY NETWORK LIMITATIONS, REQUIREMENT FOR REINFORCEMENT, ASSET DIVERSIONARY WORKS AND PROJECTED COSTS.

ELECTRICITY INFRASTRUCTURE PROCUREMENT CONTRACT: UESL AWARDED A CONTRACT TO DEVELOP PERFORMANCE CRITERIA FOR A MAJOR DISTRIBUTED GENERATION PROJECT AT BLAYDON BURN IN THE NORTH EAST. UESL TO PREPARE TENDER DOCUMENTATIION AND ISSUE TO NERS ACCREDITED ICPs. UESL WILL PLAY A LEADING ROLE IN THE CONTRACT PROCUREMENT PROCESS AS WELL AS MANAGING THE ELECTRICITY CONNECTION ONTO THE DISTRIBUTION NETWORK.

EHV NETWORK DESIGN APPOINTMENT (ICP CLIENT): UESL AWARDED THE 33kV NETWORK DESIGN CONTRACT FOR FLATWORTH STOR 33kV CONNECTION. DESIGN INCLUDES SUBSTATION, 33kV SWITCHGEAR, PROTECTION PANEL ENGINEERING & CABLING.

DISTRIBUTION NETWORK STUDIES:  UESL APPOINTED TO CARRY OUT NETWORK CONNECTION FEASIBILITY STUDIES FOR 2 BIOMASS PLANTS IN THE NORTH WEST OF ENGLAND.

LV NETWORK DESIGN (ICP CLIENTS) : UESL APPOINTED TO CARRY OUT THE CONTESTABLE NETWORK DESIGNS FOR 3 NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS AT DARLESTON IN THE MIDLANDS, WADSWORTH ROYD IN YORKSHIRE & PRIORY MILL IN DARTFORD.
